Game Jam Project · 2021
Steal everything in sight using slippery movement, unconventional powers and a complete disregard for sensible physics.
Project Overview
Butter Thief is a comedic physics-based action and stealth game created by a three-person team for Weekly Game Jam 205.
The jam’s “Unconventional Powers” theme became a thief whose buttery abilities affect movement, evasion and interactions with pursuing guards.
Players explore the level, steal as many valuables as possible and escape while attempting to achieve the highest score.
The “Unconventional Powers” theme became a slippery thief whose greatest strength is also responsible for the game’s unpredictable movement.
Butter influences the physics-based movement, creating a deliberately chaotic challenge as the player attempts to navigate the level efficiently.
The same absurd concept extends into evasion: the player can use sweat to make guards slip, providing an unusual defensive tool when escaping with stolen valuables.
Enter the level and identify valuable objects while monitoring nearby guards.
Collect as much loot as possible to increase the final high score.
Escape pursuing guards using movement, positioning and slippery sweat.
Reach safety with the stolen valuables before the guards catch the thief.
The systems combine score-driven theft with deliberately unpredictable physics and guard behaviour.
My primary technical responsibility was developing the enemy guards while collaborating on the movement, level and overall game design.
Created alongside MuFake and Wolfguts.
Butter Thief was my first experience designing and implementing a complete enemy AI system.
Guards needed to detect and pursue the player while remaining compatible with the same physics-heavy world that made movement deliberately unpredictable.
The AI also needed to react correctly when slipping, recover from interruptions and continue pursuing the player without losing track of the objective.
Balancing reliable guard behaviour with comedic physics became one of the project’s most valuable technical and design challenges.

Butter Thief became a memorable collaboration where the absurd central idea, physics and team contributions came together into a complete playable experience.
The team had fun throughout development, and that sense of humour became an important part of the finished project’s identity.
The project also gave me practical experience designing enemy AI within a fast game-jam development schedule.
