Oppuzzle

Navigate opposing sides of a shared puzzle space, moving objects and activating mechanisms to uncover a route forward.

Two sides.
One solution.

Oppuzzle is a puzzle game created by a three-person team for Game Jam Summit 2022 in response to the theme of “Opposites.”

Players move through spaces built around opposing sides, pushing objects onto pressure plates and interacting with buttons or levers to alter the level.

Each puzzle asks the player to understand how the two sides relate before arranging the environment into a path that allows them to progress.

Design Concept

The “Opposites” theme became a spatial puzzle in which progress depends on understanding both sides of the environment.

Instead of relying on complicated controls, the game builds its challenges from movement and interaction. Objects can be repositioned, pressure plates can hold mechanisms open, and buttons or levers can change the available route.

Combining a small set of readable interactions allowed the team to create puzzles that could grow in complexity while remaining approachable during a short game jam.

Core Player Loop

01

Observe

Study the layout and identify how the two sides of the puzzle affect one another.

02

Position

Move through the level and place the player where each interaction can be reached.

03

Manipulate

Push objects and activate pressure plates, buttons or levers in the correct order.

04

Progress

Open the route forward and apply what was learned to the next puzzle space.

My Contribution

My work focused on turning the central theme into readable spaces and puzzles that rewarded observation.

Development Challenge

The greatest challenge was designing puzzles that felt satisfying to solve without making the intended progression obscure or unfair.

A puzzle designer already knows every solution, which makes it difficult to judge how much information a new player needs. The environment therefore had to communicate which objects were interactive and how each mechanism affected the route ahead.

The first level became the clearest example of this work, combining the central interactions into a puzzle space that introduces the game’s logic through level design.

Final Reflection

Oppuzzle remains a compact example of collaborative game-jam design and my interest in building gameplay directly through level layout.

I am particularly proud of the first level’s puzzle and the way its environment supports the game’s central idea. The project reinforced how important visual communication, iteration and player perspective are when creating puzzles.
